Digital Radio Promises to Change the Way We Hear Broadcasts
Michalis 'BIG Mike' Kotzakolios

So there you are, driving the afternoon commute after a long day of work. You tune to your favorite radio station and settle down into the seat of your car. During your drive, the DJ plays your favorite song or begins talking about an important topic. Unfortunately, they start at the very moment you find yourself stopped on the freeway under an overpass. By the time you emerge from the concrete dungeon your song is over and the radio host has finished his informational spiel about that interesting topic. If you are sick and tired of the radio never coming in, then digital radio is for you. It is well reported that analog radio has suffered from quality issues for quite sometime. Prompted by this realization of poor quality, radio stations to begin joining the digital radio market and introduced HD Radio in the United States.

There are currently three different ways to enjoy digital radio in your home or car. The first and most rapidly growing (in America anyway) is satellite radio. Companies like XM Satellite Radio and Sirius Satellite Radio have made it their goal to span North America with hundreds of commercial free digital radio broadcasts. Their receivers, now offered in many American made automobiles, are able to pick up the satellite’s signal nearly anywhere in the country. There are, however, some quality issues in large cities that the companies are in the process of correcting.

A popular method of broadcasting digital radio in around the world is to combine the regular AM and FM stations with digital power to create a hybrid radio station. Across the globe, radio stations have invested lots of money to provide terrestrial digital transmitters that allow regular radios in your home or car to receive preexisting stations in digital quality.

Digital radio is also available on your computer. Various radio stations from around the globe are now offering broadcasts across the internet in digital quality. Many of these stations can be picked up by media players such as Winamp’s Shoutcast and iTunes. Conversely, some businesses like Live 365 offer their own player which allows people to tune into a variety of digital radio broadcasts as well as create their own.
